Mark R. Hamilton - President, University of Alaska

President Hamilton is the 12th President of the University of Alaska.

Chancellors

Fran Ulmer - Chancellor, University of Alaska Anchorage

Fran Ulmer is the Interim Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, bringing to this position 30 years of experience of public policy in Alaska. Previously, she was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Institute of Social and Economic Research. In the early 1980s, Fran was the Mayor of Juneau, then a member of the Alaska House of Representatives (1986-1994) and in 1994, Fran became the first female Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. In that year, she was appointed to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission by President Bill Clinton and served on this international board for 11 years. Fran has participated in numerous panels, task forces, commissions and forums as a speaker, moderator and panelist to address the intersection of science, economics, politics and policy. Fran currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Advisory Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Alaska Nature Conservancy Board. Fran has a BA in political science and economics and a Law Degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Stephen Jones - Chancellor, University of Alaska Fairbanks

Jones, UAF chancellor, has been vice chancellor for extension and engagement at North Carolina State since 2001. In previous positions, he was director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University and an associate professor and assistant director of the School of Forest Resources at Pennsylvania State University. He was at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where he served as director of the Northeast Petroleum-Forest Resources Cooperative and as a visiting instructor. Prior to his academic career, Jones worked 12 years for the Union Camp Corp., a Fortune 500, multi-faceted paper and allied products manufacturer. Jones' research interests are primarily in the area of sustainable forestry. He received his Ph.D. in resources management from the State University of New York in Syracuse in December 1987. His bachelor's degree in forestry is also from SUNY Syracuse and he holds an associate degree in forestry from Maryland's Allegany Community College.

John Pugh - Chancellor, University of Alaska Southeast

John Pugh, UAS chancellor, came to the University of Alaska after a 15-year career with the State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services where he served as Commissioner from 1983 to 1986. At UAS, he was Dean of the School of Education, Liberal Arts, and Science for 9 years before his appointment as Dean of Faculty. He is a former captain in the U.S. Air Force. Pugh has a master's degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Baylor University.

Roger Brunner - General Counsel

Roger Brunner joined the University of Alaska as Vice President/General Counsel in March of 2005. He graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. degree in Computer Science in 1972. Brunner received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, after studying at the South Bend campus, plus the London, England campus and at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. Admitted to the Alaska Bar in 1976, Brunner was in private practice in Fairbanks in a large firm for ten years and then in solo practice until becoming General Counsel. Brunner is admitted to practice in the state courts, the Federal District Court of the State of Alaska, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has served on the Alaska Bar Association Fee Arbitration Executive Committee for years. Readers of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner voted Brunner the "Best Attorney in Fairbanks" in 2003. Brunner won the Alaska Bar Association's Professionalism Award in 1999.

Jim Johnsen - Vice President for Administration

Jim Johnsen began serving as Vice President for Administration in March 2006. His previous positions since coming to the University of Alaska in 1996 include Vice President for Faculty and Staff Relations, Chief of Staff, and Director of Labor Relations. In addition to his administrative duties, he has taught a variety of courses in political science and management, given presentations at national meetings, and served on the boards of several professional and community organizations. His education includes a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, a master's in political science from the University of Chicago, and a bachelor's in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Daniel J. Julius - Vice President for Academic Affairs

Daniel J. Julius is the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of Alaska and Professor in the College of Management, University of Alaska, Fairbanks. He arrived in 2007 and brings over thirty years of experience in academic and research administration. Most recently he served as Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor at Benedictine Universitv in Illinois: Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor at the University of San Francisco; Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Relations for the Califomia State University System; Director of Personnel Services for the Vermont State College System; and Director of the Center for Higher Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a past president of the College and University Personnel Association and the Academy of Academic Personnel Administrators and has also been a Visiting Scholar or adjunct faculty member at the University of New Hampshire, University of California, University of Toronto, Stanford University, University of Hawaii, the International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, the Sorbonne in France, the Universidad Catolica San Antonio in Spain, Shanghai University and Shenyang University of Technology in the Peoples Republic of China. Dr. Julius has written or co-authored approximately seventy articles and six books and is a recipient of Fulbright and Kellogg Fellowships and has served on or led approximately ten accreditation teams. He holds an undergraduate degree in Humanities from The Ohio State University. His graduate and post graduate work in organizational behavior, industrial labor relations, and higher education was completed at Columbia and Stanford Universities.

Wendy Redman - VP University Relations

Wendy Redman, vice president for university relations, came to Alaska in 1972 and went to work as a secretary in UAF's then-combined School of Biology, Wildlife, Fisheries, Agriculture, Land Resource Management, Math, Engineering & Physical Sciences. Within four years she was promoted to Assistant to the Chancellor for a newly created Community College, Rural Education, & Cooperative Extension unit. She made her first appearance before the Legislature on behalf of University of Alaska in 1977 and has been the university system's chief advocate in Juneau ever since. In 1980 she became the Assistant to the Chancellor of the UAF campus, and in 1982 moved to Statewide Administration. In 1983 she was named Vice President for University Relations with responsibility for public affairs, state and federal relations, development, and corporate programs. With her background in community college education and continuing involvement with workforce development, Redman continues to provide statewide representation, perspective and leadership for the career and technical education programs. Redman represents the University on the Alaska Human Resource Investment Council, and on the Workforce Investment Board representing Rural Alaska job training programs. Redman did her undergraduate work at the University of Washington and completed her master's degree in public policy at Harvard University.

Steve Smith - Chief Information Technology Officer

Steve Smith is the Chief Information Technology Officer (CITO)for the University of Alaska. He has over thirty years experience in all aspects of information technology in higher education. His educational background includes an undergraduate degree with an emphasis in broadcasting and filmmaking from the University of Iowa and a graduate degree in telecommunications from the University of Hawaii. His professional experience includes campus computing, library systems, public broadcasting, distance delivery, and extensive experience in network operations and design including satellite systems to remote areas and high speed Internet2 optical networks. In his role as CITO for the University of Alaska he has worked on policy, regulation, IT investment strategy, and public-private partnerships. He was a founder of the Fairbanks Community Network and is one of three U.S. representatives on the Information Communications Technology Network for the Arctic Council, comprised of the eight arctic nations. He is on the executive board of the Northwest Academic Computing Consortium, Chair of the Pacific Northwest Gigapop Advisory Council, a board member of ResearchChannel, President of the Alaska Telecommunications Users Consortium, and the executive liaison for the University of Alaska for Internet2. His latest major endeavor is consolidating the statewide IT departments with the University of Alaska Fairbanks IT departments.
