Download and Install
Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus
for Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS X

Viruses and other kinds of destructive computer software have become a serious problem in the computing world. Because of the ever increasing number of viruses being written it is important to protect your computer and data. There are many excellent programs available to help protect your computer against virus attacks. The University of Alaska has made Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus Software available at no charge to the campus.

Basic virus safety protocols:

  • Backup anything you would not want destroyed by a virus attack.
  • Backup your files regularly.
  • Use your Antivirus software to scan all files from an untrusted source before you put them on your machine.

Download Symantec (Norton) Anti-Virus Software

Before you download Symantec AntiVirus software, please read the following along with the related instructions for your particular operating system!

At the OIT Download Site, you will see a page that lists multiple platforms for which Symantec can be downloaded. Select the one appropriate for your computer system. A window will appear asking you where you would like to save the file. Using the drop down menu switch to your desktop and then choose save. Continue following these instructions according to your operating system (below).

The above URL is restricted to people affiliated with University of Alaska, so you will need to authenticate with the UAF VPN if you are off-campus, or use an Ethernet connection at the UAF campus.

Please note: The following directions are for Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS X. These are the only operating systems currently supported by DCC. AntiVirus may or may not work on other operating systems, but we will not be able to able to assist you in any installation or other related issues with operating systems other than those we support. Take me to the Mac OS X instructions.

Windows 2000/XP Installation:

Upon getting to the AntiVirus download page, you will see two different options for download:

Managed or Unmanaged
Managed is for ON CAMPUS UNIVERSITY OWNED COMPUTERS ONLY.
Unmanaged is for everyone else (including students living in the dorms).

If you use the wrong version, there is a good chance you will not be able to get your virus updates correctly and thus will not be fully protected. If you install the wrong version, the only way to switch from one version to another is to completely uninstall AntiVirus and reinstall the correct version.

MANAGED Installation on Windows 2000/XP

1. Save your work and quit any other applications running.
2. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
3. On your desktop, double-click nav8man.exe.
4. In the Client Setup window that opens, click Next.



5. Check "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click Next.
6. Make sure the Microsoft Exchange/Outlook box is selected and click Next.
7. On the destination folder screen click Next.
8. Make sure the "Managed" box is selected and click Next.

9. Make sure the server name is MILLENNIUM and click Next.
10. Also on the "verify server name" screen click Next.
11. Click Install to begin installation.
12. On the technical support screen click Next and then Finish. You're done with the Managed installation.

How to scan and set up regular scans of your machine.

UNMANAGED Installation on Windows 2000/XP:

1. Save your work and quit any other applications running.
2. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
3. On your desktop, double-click nav8unman.exe.
4. In the Client Setup window that opens, click Next.
5. Check "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click Next.
6. Make sure the Microsoft Exchange/Outlook box is selected and click Next.
7. On the destination folder screen click Next.
8. Make sure the "Unmanaged" box is selected and click Next.

9. Make sure the "File System Realtime Protection" box is checked and click Next.
10. Make sure the "Run Liveupdate" box is checked and click Next.
11. Click Install to begin the installation.
12. This LiveUpdate window will show up before the installation finishes, click Next to search for updates. Updates will install.



13. On the technical support screen that appears, click Next, and then click Finish. You’re done with the Unmanaged installation. With an Unmanaged installation, you need to update your virus definitions regularly! Steps follow below:

Updating Virus Definitions with LiveUpdate (For Unmanaged installations):

1. Save all of your work and quit all of your applications.
2. Make sure that your computer is connected to the internet.
3. Click on the Start button located in the bottom left of your screen.
4. Select the Programs menu
5. Select the Symantec Client Security menu.
6. Select the Symantec AntiVirus Client program to launch the program.
7. Click on the LiveUpdate button

Remember: Virus detection programs can only find known viruses. If a new virus appears, use Symantec’s LiveUpdate to automatically download an updated version of Symantec’s Antivirus definitions. With the Unmanaged installation, this is critical to effectively protecting your computer.

How to scan and set up regular scans of your machine:

Start Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus Corporate Edition. You will need to run this application whenever you want to check your computer or a file to see if it has a virus.
1. Click on the Start button located in the bottom left of your screen.
2. Select the Programs menu
3. Select the Symantec Client Security menu.
4. Select the Symantec AntiVirus Client program to launch the program.

Performing a scan:
1. Open the Scan menu and select Scan Computer.
2. Select the drives that you wish to scan.

3. Click on the Scan button to start the virus check.

Scheduling regular scans of your computer:
1. Start the Symantec AntiVirus program. Open the Edit menu and select New Scheduled Scan.
2. Under the Scan Name field enter Daily Virus Check.

3. In the Description field enter Daily Check, then click the Next button.
4. For the At time field you will want to select a time your computer will be running, but make it a time that won’t interfere with your normal work schedule.

5. Click on the Next button. Select the drive(s) that you wish to have scanned.
6. Click on the Save button.
7. Go to the File menu and select Exit.


Mac OS X Installation:

1. Open the Install folder. Double-click on the Norton AntiVirus Installer icon

2. You may then need to authenticate by entering your Administrator password. Do so if prompted.

3. The Installer may need to run a program to see if it can continue. Click on the Continue button.

Installer needs to test if it can install the program.

4. At the Welcome (or Introduction) window, click on the Continue button.

5. You'll be prompted to read important information. Click on Continue.

6. Then, you'll be asked to read the Software License Agreement. After you've reviewed it, click Continue. You will be asked if you agree or disagree with the terms. If you agree with the terms, click Agree.

7. Next, you'll need to select a destination volume upon which to install the program. For example, the "MacHD" is selected in the picture below. After you've made your selection, click Continue.

8. Last, you'll be prompted to click on Install to perform the installation. You may need to restart your computer. After restarting, you'll find the application in the Norton Solutions folder in your Applications folder.

Be sure to run LiveUpdate and update your virus definitions regularly!
