My Fellow Alaskans:
In 1955, fifty-five men and women from across Alaska gathered at a small university at the edge of the wilderness to draft a constitution for a state that didn’t yet exist. They were visionaries, statesmen, and above all, Alaskans. Their lives were as different as the places they called home. Ministers from Unalakleet met with Anchorage attorneys. Fairbanks housewives deliberated with Klawock shopkeepers. Republicans and Democrats, men and women, rural and urban, young and old, they gathered in a spirit of optimism, dedication and the knowledge that their goal was worthwhile and honorable.
Over the course of seventy-five days, these Alaskans crafted what would be hailed as a model constitution. Forging a dynamic state, they created a government in the American ideal – of the people, by the people and for the people.
Those of us fortunate to call Alaska home are the beneficiaries of a rich heritage of statesmanship from the many men and women who pioneered this great land. While many rightfully yearn for the “good old days” of yesteryear, I have always believed that Alaska’s best days are yet to come.
In this spirit of Alaskan optimism, the University will host in January 2006 a “Conference of Young Alaskans” on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Bringing together fifty-five high school and university students, as well as young people involved in trades, together we will seek solutions to the challenges facing Alaska and her people.
I encourage Alaskans to nominate young leaders in their communities to act as delegates to this historic conference. In addition, I invite the young people of Alaska to nominate themselves. This remarkable opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience has great potential to be a vehicle for young voices in our communities to be heard.
Please feel free to contact Joseph Hardenbrook, Coordinator for the Creating Alaska Project at 907-450-8599 or hardenbrook@alaska.edu with any questions or comments.
The University of Alaska is proud to support the young leaders who call Alaska home. It is the young men and women who will develop Alaska’s potential. Their leadership, I am certain, will carry us toward the bright future that all Alaskans deserve.
Sincerely,

Mark Hamilton President University of Alaska
