Dr. Burke received a PhD in Genetics and an MD from the University of Washington, completed a medical residency in Internal Medicine, and was a Medical Genetics Fellow at UW. Before taking her current position as Chair of the Department of Medical History and Ethics, she was a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at UW.  She continues to do clinical work as an attending physician in the UW Adult Genetics Clinic. Her academic work addresses the ethical and policy implications of genetic information in medicine and public health.   She is particularly interested in the diffusion of genetics into mainstream clinical practice and its implications for medically underserved populations. Past projects have included studies of women’s interest in breast cancer susceptibility testing and response to genetic counseling, focusing on women with moderately increased risk; development of educational tools in genetics for primary care physicians; and analysis of the clinical and policy implications of emerging genetic testing options, including testing for hereditary hemochromatosis, cancer genetics and pharmacogenetics. She has also participated in several practice guideline panels related to genetic testing. Dr. Burke is currently Principal Investigator of the University of Washington Center for Genomics and Healthcare Equality, a Center of Excellence in Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Research, funded by NHGRI and NICHD.    The Center is focused on the implications of genetic healthcare for medically underserved populations.  As a central part of their effort, they are developing partnerships with Native communities in Alaska and Washington, to address questions such as the use of family history in clinical care, and to identify and develop educational and other joint strategies to increase research capacity.  They are also pursuing a series of analytic projects aimed at defining appropriate methods for evaluation of emerging genetic tests.
