Mary Sexton, PhD, MPH
Dr. Sexton received her doctoral in sociology and her public health degree in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. She was a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine until 2003 and since then has been a private consultant. Her interests are in both epidemiological research and training in epidemiological methods of research. She has conducted clinical trials on smoking exposure in utero and outcomes of birth status and early childhood development, including both physical and cognitive functioning. Her clinical trial that established a reduction in birth weight and prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke is regarded as a landmark study that laid the foundation for a public health focus to reduce smoking during pregnancy. Her cardiovascular research has spanned dietary, medication, and behavioral interventions as well as economic benefits of treatment programs. Additionally, she conducted a randomized clinical trial to assess the effectiveness of a lead prevention program on reduction of lead exposure to newborns.
She was director for ten years of a master’s and doctoral program that focused on training in clinical and epidemiological research. She has taught research methodology for the conduct of human subjects research for over two decades. Her current work includes chemical exposures and health outcomes.
