Benefits and Leave

Employee Education Benefits P04.06.010

Regular employees, their spouses, and dependent children under the age of 24 are considered residents for enrollment purposes. Regular employees, spouses, and dependents are authorized a waiver of course credit hour charges as prescribed by regulation. Employees are responsible for any tax liability generated from employee education benefits.

Retirement System P04.06.050

Several retirement programs are available to University of Alaska employees. The placement of an employee who is eligible for one of the retirement programs will be governed by the appropriate state statute and/or the university's master plan document.

The University of Alaska Statewide Office of Human Resources will be responsible for preparing and maintaining an accurate and inclusive listing of all University job titles for inclusion in each of the available retirement programs.

University of Alaska Pension Plan P04.06.060

Provisions for employee participation in the University of Alaska Pension Plan will be established by regulation.

Tax Deferred Annuities P04.06.070

Provisions for employee participation in certain tax deferred investments will be established by regulation.

Housing for Faculty and Staff P04.06.080

Housing or a housing allowance will be provided by the university to the president and chancellors. Housing will be reserved by the president for administration and staff personnel as provided by regulation.

Workers' Compensation Insurance P04.06.090

Workers' compensation is a "no-fault" law which prescribes medical and wage loss benefits to be paid to an employee injured or made ill because of work conditions. It may also pay benefits to dependents in case of death. Further details on this coverage are contained in the Risk Management regulation.

Benefits for Extended Full-Time and Part-Time Temporary Employees P04.06.100

Proportionate annual, sick, and holiday leave benefits are provided to extended temporary employees as prescribed by regulation.

Holidays P04.06.110

The schedule of holiday observance shall be established by regulation.

Annual Leave P04.06.120

Annual leave is accrued at a rate specified below for all eligible full-time employees except faculty with less than a 12-month contract. All eligible part-time employees will accrue annual leave on an hours paid basis.

5.54 hours per 80 paid hour pay period during the first 5 years
6.46 hours per 80 paid hour pay period during 6-10 years
7.38 hours per 80 paid hour pay period over 10 years

Annual leave accrued, but not used, will accrue to a maximum of not more than 240 hours. Unused leave in excess of the maximum at the close of business on January 31 will be forfeited.

Sick Leave P04.06.130

A.
Eligible exempt and nonexempt full-time employees earn 4.62 hours of sick leave per 80 paid hour pay period.

1.
Exempt and nonexempt full-time employees will accrue sick leave on an hours paid basis.

2.
Exempt and nonexempt part-time employees will accrue sick leave on an hours paid basis.

3.
Overtime and other forms of premium pay do not qualify for sick leave accrual.

B.
At termination, all sick leave accumulations are lost. Employees who are rehired into a leave eligible position within three years after layoff will have their previous accrued sick leave reinstated.

C.
Exceptions, conditions and limitations applicable to eligibility, accrual and use of sick leave will be in accordance with regulation. The president may establish by regulation procedures providing for the sharing of sick leave by university employees.

A sick leave of absence without pay may be granted to employees as established in regulation.

Specific provisions for military leave will be established by regulation.

Leaves of Absence (nonmedical) P04.06.190

Specific provisions for leaves of absence will be set forth in regulation. Leaves of absence must be approved by the chancellor, or in appropriate cases, the president. Granting leaves of absence will not affect the employee's status except as provided by regulation or as agreed in writing at the time leave is granted.

Special Assignments P04.06.200

Non-faculty staff of the university may be assigned duties that require absence from their units for periods of time as established by regulation.
